چکیده

Plankton is the productive base of aquatic ecosystems and plays a major role in the global control of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, after intensive study, the factors that drive its spatial distribution are still far from being clear. The models proposed so far show very limited agreement with actual data as many of their results are not consistent with field observations. Here we show that fluctuations and turbulent diffusion in standard prey-predator models are able to accurately and consistently explain plankton field observations at mesoscales (1-100 km). This includes not only the spatial pattern but also its temporal evolution. We explicitly elucidate the interplay between physical and biological factors, suggesting that the form in which small scale biotic fluctuations are transferred to larger scales may constitute one of the key elements in determining the spatial distribution of plankton in the sea.

Conditions for patchiness in plankton models.

Plankton patchiness in homogeneous physical environments is studied in this paper assuming that all involved populations disperse diffusively. A recent but powerful sufficient condition for the emergence of spatial patterns in models with any number of species is systematically applied to all food chain and food web plankton models and the result is rather sharp: all models explicitly containin...

The Effects of Lagrangian vs. Population Dynamics on Plankton Patchiness Generation

The relative importance of Lagrangian and population dynamics on spatial pattern formation in the distribution of plankton near the ocean’s surface is investigated. Phytoplankton and zooplankton are treated as biologically interacting tracers that are passively advected by a divergence-free two-dimensional nonsteady velocity field. The time-dependence of this field is assumed to be quasiperiodi...

Turbulence drives microscale patches of motile phytoplankton.

Patchiness plays a fundamental role in phytoplankton ecology by dictating the rate at which individual cells encounter each other and their predators. The distribution of motile phytoplankton species is often considerably more patchy than that of non-motile species at submetre length scales, yet the mechanism generating this patchiness has remained unknown. Here we show that strong patchiness a...

Plankton lattices and the role of chaos in plankton patchiness.

Spatiotemporal and interspecies irregularities in planktonic populations have been widely observed. Much research into the drivers of such plankton patches has been initiated over the past few decades but only recently have the dynamics of the interacting patches themselves been considered. We take a coupled lattice approach to model continuous-in-time plankton patch dynamics, as opposed to the...

Plankton blooms induced by turbulent flows.

Plankton play an important role in the ecology of the ocean and the climate because of their participation in the global carbon cycle at the base of the food chain. However, damaging plankton blooms can sometimes occur and are initially characterized by sudden transient increases in the phytoplankton population. They are thought to be driven by several effects, such as seasonal variations in te...
